England Under-19s have added Kent fast bowler Hugh Bernard to their squad for the Royal London One-Day Series against Sri Lanka, which starts at Wormsley on Wednesday.

Bernard is included because of an injury doubt over Ed Barnes, the Yorkshire allrounder who impressed in the two four-day matches against the Sri Lankans, but suffered an ankle injury in the last session of England’s defeat in the second game in Northampton.

The 19-year-old from Folkestone said: “I’m delighted to be called up to the squad for the series and I’m looking forward to working with the squad and coaches.

“It would be great to play on home turf wearing the Three Lions next week but I need to work hard and earn that opportunity.”

Andy Hurry, the head coach of the England Development Programme, said: “Ed will be staying with the squad and we’re still hopeful he can play a part in our one-day matches against Sri Lanka. But given the injury he has sustained, it was sensible for us to add Hugh to the squad.

“He has experience of playing Under-19 international cricket with us before, and I’m sure he will be keen to take this chance.”

Bernard has made nine appearances for England Under-19s, touring Australia in the spring of 2015 and Sri Lanka later that year, after taking 3-52 in a series-equalling victory over Australia in Worcester last August.

He made his first-class debut for Kent in a Specsavers County Championship match against Glamorgan in May, taking three wickets and scoring 14 in a 10-wicket win.

The third and last match of the Royal London One-Day Series is under floodlights at his home county ground – the Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence – and will be shown live on Sky Sports.
