Asher-Smith breaks British record

Kent’s Dina Asher-Smith set a new British Championship record in Birmingham as she stormed to victory in the women’s 100m at the Alexander Stadium.

The first day of competition in the Midlands saw the reigning European champion lower the Championship record to 10.97s and qualify for August’s European Athletics Championships in Berlin.

The 22-year-old from Orpington takes the title of British champion while Daryll Neita finished second and also qualifies for Berlin while Bianca Williams took bronze.

Asher-Smith now holds the British record for both 100m and 200m events and will defend her European 200m title later this summer.
