Addicks keen to seal Holmes deal

Top of Karl Robinson’s agenda when the players report back for pre-season training this week, will be tying Ricky Holmes down to a new deal.

Holmes – who celebrated his 30th birthday on Monday – has been targeted by his former boss, Chris Wilder, all summer. The Addicks have turned down two bids from Sheffield United, and told the Blades the player is not for sale.

Prior to last season, Holmes had never played above League Two level, but he took to League One like a duck to water.

He finished the season as Charlton’s top scorer with 13 goals, and won the fans’ Player Of The Year award‎.

Robinson had this to say about the situation:

“I want him (Holmes) here. We have turned down two bids from a club for him.

“We have to give him a new contract, we have to show him love.”

‎That love will be shown with a hefty pay rise and a long term contract.

Another situation that needs to be finalised quickly is the roles of Lee Bowyer and Johnnie Jackson, widely expected to be named as assistant manager and first team coach respectively.

An announcement was expected in early May, but nothing has been confirmed so far.

MK Dons playmaker, Ben Reeves, has been rumoured to be joining the Addicks almost from the time Robinson joined the club.

Clubs up-and-down the country will be starting their pre-season preparations this week, and unattached players will start making decisions about their futures.

Robinson will want to resolve the Reeves situation quickly. If he drags his feet much longer, Reeves may find that Charlton will move on.

The manager has said he still wants to sign a number 10 or winger, and Reeves fits the bill perfectly.

But so does another player who is already on Charlton’s books. Amongst those reporting back to Sparrows Lane on Monday will be Cristian Ceballos.
