Addicks exit FA Youth Cup

Charlton’s Under-18 side were beaten 4-3 by Reading at Welling in Round Four of the FA Youth Cup on Tuesday evening.

The young Addicks were desperately unlucky to lose an incident packed game to their Category One opponents.

‎The game ended with only nine players from each team on the pitch.

Charlton took the lead after 16 minutes through an Albie Morgan penalty. Morgan converted the spot-kick after Jordan Zemura was hauled down in the box.

The Addicks held the lead until deep into first-half stoppage time, when‎ Jordan Holsgrove levelled for the Royals.

It took a great save from Reading keeper, Adam Desbois, to stop Alex Willis restoring Charlton’s lead ten minutes after the restart, but the respite was short lived.

From the resultant corner Sam Nwosu headed the Addicks back in front.

Seven minutes later‎, the Royals again failed to deal with a Charlton corner, and this time Willis was on hand to apply the finishing touch.

Reading pulled a goal back after 67 minutes when Samuel Fani‎yan nodded home a free-kick.

Ben Dempsey hit the post for the hosts, but deep into added on time, Holsgrove ‎levelled for the visitors for a second time.

The Addicks started extra-time with ten men. Dan Birch was shown a red card after the final whistle for a second bookable offence.

‎Midway through the first period of Daniel Loader netted what proved to be the winner for the Royals.

Loader was then guilty of an awful challenge that resulted in Dempsey being unable to carry on.

Reading were also reduced to nine men in the second period of when both Loader and Tom Holmes picked up second yellow cards.

‎The game almost took a final twist. Brendan Sarpong-Wiredu rattled the bar, but Charlton could not quite manage to get the goal that would have taken the contest to penalties.
