A very soggy Lydden Hill set the scene for round 5 of the British Rallycross Championship. A round in which saw a number of the category championships decided.BRXL14-1006

Despite the British summer time plaguing the Kent circuit in full force, competitors and spectators alike braved the rain for an action packed day, which saw around 50 on track sessions through out the 1 day of action!

The drivers came to grips with the track conditions in each of their 3 heats through the morning which set the stage for the afternoons finals. Former British Rallycross champion, Ollie O’Donnovan shone in each of his Supercar heats, laying down heat times which could not be rivalled.

O’Donnovan continued his impressive form in to the finals, taking home the event win in dominant fashion, but it was the chasing car of Julian Godfrey who clinched the British Rallycross Supercar championship with his second place run – this was Godfreys first final finish off of the top step of the podium this year, proving just how strong of a season he has been having. This was Godfreys 4th British title in the category. Steve Hill rounded off the top 3 in his ever popular, Mitsubushi Lancer.BRXL14-0699

Dave Bellerby was on strong form in the MSA Supernational class, managing to pilot his Lotus Exige to 2 heat wins from 3. Stuart Emery in his Peugeot 206 to claimed the 3rd. With his 2 heat victories, Bellerby set the fastest heat time of the day handing him pole position for the final, in which he converted to victory after being chase home by Emery.

The Suzuki Swift class once again attracted a strong field and didn’t fail to provide a dose of the days action. Chris Mullen clinched pole for the final, but all of his hard work was un-done in the run to turn one in an incident which saw him sidelined. Tristian Ovenden seized the opportunity which has risen from Mullens misfortune. Ovenden lead home the Swift victory, followed by Dave Ellis and Darren Scott.

Retro Rallycross honours were claimed by Rob Gibson in his bright yellow Metro 6R4. After a recent engine rebuild in the Metro, Gibson was able to utilise the legendary machine and dominate the days running. Ray Morgan in his Ford Escort managed to claim 2nd behind Gibson, but it was the “David vs Goliath” battle for 3rd where the Mini Cooper of Ian Biagi held off the Porsche 911 of  Barry Steart.BRXL14-1022

Marx Scott was victorious in the RX150 class after taking the lead from the pole sitting Richard Moore. Moore may have succumb to Scott in the battle for 1st, but he held position to finish 2nd ahead of débutante Stephan Jones.

Craig Lomax won the HotHatch final, which also clinched him the championship title. Charlie Bean took the top spot in the Junior Swifts, Kris Hudson in the BMW Minis and Jack Thorne won the 1600 class.

Even despite the weather, the show went on as planned with little to no delays – credit to the event organisers and the race marshals.
