Conway back on track

This weekend will see Mike Conway return to action in the 2018/19 WEC Super Season, as the championship reaches its penultimate round. With the Drivers’ Championship very much still up for grabs, Mike will be hoping for another positive result in the seventh round of the season – The 6 Hours of Spa.

Entering the crucial stage of the Super Season, Mike will once again get behind the wheel of the #7 TS050 HYBRID, as he and teammates, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López, join forces for the penultimate race of the season in at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps.

Mike’s season began back in 2018 at Spa, with the opening race of the Super Season. Since then, Conway and the #7 have performed consistently throughout the duration of the Super Season, which has seen them duly rewarded with 5 podiums from 6 races, including two wins and a further three podiums.

The iconic 7.004km Circuit De Spa Francorchamps is the second longest on the WEC calendar and will provide a stern test for drivers. However, Mike and the #7 team will be going into the weekend’s action with plenty of practice under their belts following a recent 4,000km test at Paul Ricard in preparation for this weekend’s action and the final race, The 24 Hour of Le Mans.

The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing team currently leads the World Championship by 53 points and will secure the title with one race remaining by scoring 12 points at Spa, or if nearest challengers Rebellion Racing fails to finish on the podium this weekend.

While the team’s World Championship is close to a conclusion, Mike’s battle in the Drivers’ Championship remains very open with two races and 65 points available. The #8 TS050 team currently hold a slender advantage of 15 points over Mike and #7 team ahead of the final two races of the season.

Speaking ahead of the weekend, Conway said: “Spa is one of my favourite races so I am looking forward to getting back. We have been unlucky there a few times when we had the chance to win but it hasn’t worked out. We had a really quick car at Spa last year but started one lap down due to the penalty; we still came through and nearly won.

So we need to pick up from there and we will be in good shape. I’d love to win in Spa and that will be my target for this week, as well as helping the team secure the championship, which everyone has worked so hard for and deserves to be rewarded with!”
